Douglas Alonzo Herrin was born in 1922 in Sumrall, Mississippi to Fannie and Alonzo Herrin with siblings Dale and Harold. He completed high school and, at the age of 20, was drafted into the US army as a Warrant Officer Private and was assigned to the 764th Bomb Squadron at the time of its creation.
Before his death in 1944, Herrin flew several missions over Europe and, after his passing, the squadron continued to fly missions in the Pacific. During his service, Lieutenant Herrin was recognized multiple times for his bravery and flying expertise.
He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, American Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal. Today he is buried in Lorraine American Cemetery in St. Avold, France; Plot A, Row 18, Grave 39.
