Munich West Marshalling Yard was the first target of the month for the 764th Bomb Squadron in October 1944. The mission was successful, but resulted in significant loss for the 764th; two planes had to return early due to flight complications and seven others were lost during the bomb run. A great amount of the yard was destroyed by the bombing, including the underpass that ran through the center.
Of the nineteen planes that returned after the mission, sixteen were damaged, one of which was piloted by 1st Lieutenant Douglas A. Herrin. No deaths were suffered by the 764th, but seventy-two men were left missing in action as a result of seven aircraft that went down during this mission.
