The 461st Bombardment Group was founded in 1943 and began its training in July that year in Utah, California, and Idaho. Mainly, the group flew long-range operations in Europe, deploying a total of 6,168 aircraft over 216 missions; over 500 of these aircraft were lost or used as salvage due to damages sustained in battle. After the surrender of Italy, the group dropped supplies over POW camps. When the war in Europe came to an end, the 461st was deployed to the Pacific and only returned to the United States in 1945.
